About Regen Resource Recovery

Regen’s Welland, Canada site is the first project approved under the Province of Ontario’s Resource Recovery and Circular Economy Act, 2016 and has the exclusive right to process synthetic graphite from a landfill at a former Union Carbide manufacturing site.

The site is strategically located to road, rail and seaborne transportation routes. It is also located near current and planned battery and OEM manufacturing in Canada and the US.

What makes our graphite so essential?

Both Canada and the United States have designated graphite a ‘critical mineral’ - meaning it is both essential to Canada’s economic security and is required for Canada’s transition to a low-carbon economy. All automakers will be required to meet 100% EV sales targets by 2035 in Canada and the US and there is no immediate term source for graphite in the region, complicating local content requirements for funding and tariff compliance.

Union Carbide Plant, Welland ON

The History - Union Carbide Plant

The Welland facility produced the highest quality electrodes and graphite products in the world for over 90 years. It was an extremely large facility with over 110 buildings on site. At its height, it employed around 2,000 people and was a major industry leader in the area.

The market for carbon and graphite grew so much that a new state of the art graphite plant, specifically for large diameter graphite, was built on the east side of the property. It was during this time that the Union Carbide took steps and processes to make their facilities cleaner and to cut emissions.
